5 Mindfulness Techniques for Busy Individuals

  1. Mindful Breathing

This can be done at your desk, in a private restroom, in a meeting room, or in your vehicle.  For 5 minutes, bring your attention to your breathing and gently ignore everything else around you.

  1. Mindful Listening

This can be done in any environment.  Take a moment and focus on the sounds you hear around you…the sound of people talking…the sound of your computer…the sound of the clock ticking…the sound of the air conditioning unit…the sound of the wind blowing…the sound of animals.

  1. Mindful Observation (Sight)

This can be done in any environment.  Look at the room or area you are in and take notice of what color stands out to you.  Look around again and notice another color that stands out to you.  Look again and notice another color that stands out.

  1. Mindful Observation (Smell)

This can be done in any environment.  Take notice of the smells around you.  Do you notice an air freshener…what fragrances stand out?  Perfume or cologne?  Cleaning supplies?  Trees or flowers outside?  Other smells?

  1. Mindful Awareness

This can be done in any environment with any object.  Take an object into your hands, like a pen.  Take notice of the pen…notice the weight of the pen in your hands.  Notice the texture of the pen.  Notice the color.  Notice the writing, if any, on the pen.  Allow yourself to fully notice the pen.

Mindfulness can be done by anyone, anywhere and only takes minutes, but has the capability of restoring hours into your lives.
